We would love to welcome you to 100 Acres & An Ox Country Inn…… a Victorian reproduction in the heart of Nova Scotia.

Return to a simpler time; look out over our rolling green hills and blue waters and see what you have come to find. This is the essence of not only Nova Scotia but all that is good for the spirit.

100 Acres is a Canada Select 4 ½ star rated accommodation with four comfortable rooms all with private ensuite baths. Our upscale country décor, extensive library and down home hospitality are second to none. In fact, the March 2003 issue of Travel and Leisure described 100 Acres as “one of the world’s great B&B experiences”!

For those wanting soft adventure we border a large lake perfect for swimming, canoeing and kayaking…. we provide the equipment free of charge.

Stroll the trails through our 100 Acres and enjoy soaring eagles and hawks and an abundance of wildlife.

100 Acres is a fisherman’s paradise. We are uniquely situated on Indian Lake where its outflow becomes the LaHave River, one of the most beautiful waterways in the Province. Bruce is an expert fly fisherman and fly tier and can be available to give assistance to guests wanting to fish for salmon and trout in April, May, or June.

Ardythe, your host, is a great cook and has studied cooking at Le Cordon Bleu in Ottawa and Paris. Enjoy your breakfast!

She loves to give afternoon cooking classes in her spacious kitchen where fresh products from Nova Scotia are featured… mussels, scallops and lamb, with vegetables and herbs from the gardens at 100 Acres. Simple cooking but with a French flair. Advance notice is required for the three- hour class. The cost is $75/ person but you get to eat everything you cook!

100 Acres is off the beaten path but certainly well situated to tour the South Shore or Lighthouse Route of Nova Scotia. Mahone Bay and Lunenburg are only 20 minutes away and Halifax and Peggy’s Cove an hour’s drive.

Visitors can easily take wonderful day trips through the province to the Annapolis Valley and visit Grand Pre and Wolfville.

Ardythe and Bruce were both born in Nova Scotia and have lived here most of their lives so are well able to help you find those out of the way places that always highlight a vacation.

We understand that you will want to see lots of the beauty that is Nova Scotia but if you choose to stay with us you will return home to a quiet sleep in wonderful surroundings, perhaps an evening swim/paddle and who knows….. Ardythe might even cook you something special.

Origin of the Name "100 Acres and an Ox"

When Abraham Lincoln was giving the slaves their freedom, he was also going to give them 40 acres and a mule. In fact, there is a movement in the States attempting to acquire that lost promise, and Spike Lee calls his movie production company, "40 Acres and a Mule." The land grants offered in the USA were 40 acres, while those on Canada's east coast were 100 acres.

Oxen are very popular in Ardythe and Bruce's  part of Nova Scotia. It is nothing for the Canada Day Ox Pull in the neighbouring community of New Germany to have 40 pairs of oxen entered.

Since Bruce and Ardythe broke away from their city ties and sought freedom from the rat race six years ago, the name has come to symbolize freedom!
